How to Clean Sneaker Laces Without Soaking the Shoes

Dirty laces do not always mean the whole shoe needs washing. Cleaning the laces separately lets you keep water away from the upper, lining and glued parts. The right method depends on the lace material and finish, so begin with the care instructions supplied with your pair.

Inspect and photograph before removing the laces

Take a photo of the lacing pattern and note which lace belongs to each shoe. Loosen each row instead of dragging a tight lace through the eyelets. Check the ends, called aglets, for cracks or loose coverings. Frayed, elastic, coated, printed or decorative laces may need a different approach from plain washable textile laces. If their material or care method is unclear, ask the seller before wetting them.

Start with dry debris and a small test

Lay the laces on a clean towel and gently brush away loose surface dirt with a soft, dry brush. Do not pull at loose fibres. If washing is permitted, test a small, less visible section with cool water and a little mild detergent suitable for that material. Stop if colour transfers, the surface changes or the covering starts to separate. A successful test reduces uncertainty but does not guarantee every part will react the same way.

Wash only when the care instructions allow it

For washable textile laces that pass the test, gently work the diluted detergent through the soiled areas by hand. Keep fragile or decorative tips out of the water. Avoid aggressive scrubbing, bleach and attempts to force a bright-white result. Rinse out the detergent with cool water without twisting or stretching the laces. If instructions rule out washing, follow the recommended dry-cleaning method or seek advice instead.

Dry fully before putting them back

Press the laces between clean towel layers to remove excess water, then lay them flat in a ventilated, shaded place. Avoid direct heat. Check the thicker sections near the tips as well as the middle before deciding they are dry. Feed the dry laces through the eyelets without forcing damaged tips, then adjust the tension with the shoes on. If a tip no longer threads safely, consider a suitable replacement rather than pulling harder.

Apply care advice to the actual pair

Check the supplied lace details and any care label for your own option; a gallery photo does not prove that the laces are washable. 06shop sells replica footwear, not authentic merchandise from the original brands, and is not endorsed by those brands.
